The Full Story

Osmanthus, sometimes called sweet olive, is a small-flowered shrub native to East Asia whose tiny blossoms produce a remarkably complex and captivating fragrance. In Chinese culture, osmanthus (guihua) has been prized for over two thousand years, it appears in classical poetry, is used to flavour teas and rice wines, and blooms during the Mid-Autumn Festival, linking it to themes of reunion and celebration.

The scent profile of osmanthus is strikingly unusual in the floral world. Rather than the expected green or indolic character of most white flowers, osmanthus opens with a pronounced apricot-fruity facet, layered over a suede-like leather quality, with undertones of violet leaf and a gentle, almost hay-like drydown. Some noses detect a subtle buttery richness that connects osmanthus to the gourmand family as much as the floral one.

Osmanthus absolute is obtained by solvent extraction of the fresh flowers and is one of the more expensive naturals in perfumery. The absolute is a deep orange-brown liquid with extraordinary intensity, a small amount provides noticeable effect in a composition. Its fruity-leathery character makes it a natural bridge ingredient, connecting disparate elements in a formula that might otherwise feel disjointed.

In Chinese medicine and gastronomy, osmanthus appears in numerous preparations. Osmanthus-scented green tea (guihua cha) is a traditional delicacy, and the flowers are preserved in sugar to make sweet osmanthus paste used in mooncakes and tangyuan. This culinary dimension adds a fascinating facet to the ingredient's use in perfumery, where it can suggest both refinement and warmth.

Modern niche perfumery has embraced osmanthus as a distinctive alternative to more conventional florals. It pairs beautifully with oolong tea notes, soft leather, dried fruits, and light woods. Its capacity to read simultaneously as fruity, floral, and leathery makes it a secret weapon for perfumers seeking multi-dimensional compositions that evolve continuously on the skin.

Fun Fact

Did you know?
Osmanthus and olive are botanical cousins, both belong to the Oleaceae family. There is an 800-year-old osmanthus tree in Hangzhou, China, that still blooms every autumn. The Chinese legend says the goddess Chang'e tends an osmanthus tree on the Moon.
