产生沉香树脂的真菌感染（主要是寄生瓶霉）是树木对创伤的免疫反应。健康的沉香木质地浅且无气味。只有感染的树木才会形成深色且芳香的心材——沉香，字面意思就是树木自我修复的尝试。
Extraction & Chemistry
Extraction method: 采用水蒸气蒸馏法或蒸汽蒸馏法提取来自苏门答腊树木的感染沉香心材。蒸馏过程可能持续3至7天。油的产量极低。由于过度采伐，野生苏门答腊沉香被列入《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》（CITES）名单；种植园来源日益普遍。
