Scent

Sharp, clean anise. Anethole-dominant — licorice-sweet, medicinal-bright, with ethanol warmth underneath. The louche quality translates olfactorily as a kind of opacity: the scent feels dense and milky rather than transparent. Less herbal than absinthe, less sweet than sambuca.

The Full Story

Raki is the anise-flavored spirit of Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean. The perfumery note captures its defining moment: the louche — when clear spirit turns milky-white as water is added, and anethole (the primary anise compound) precipitates out of solution.

The scent is dominated by trans-anethole (80-90% of anise oil), with ethanol warmth and a faint herbaceous background. Clean, sharp, licorice-sweet. More austere than pastis, less complex than absinthe — raki is anise distilled to its essence.

In perfumery, the raki concept provides sharp anise character with spirit warmth. It functions in Mediterranean, aromatic, and cocktail-themed compositions. The boozy component adds conviviality that pure anise oil lacks.

Raki is Turkey's national drink, traditionally consumed with meze and fish. The ritual of adding water — watching the clear spirit cloud — is central to Turkish dining culture.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
The word raki comes from the Arabic araq (sweat or condensation), referring to the distillation process. Raki consumption in Turkey is so culturally embedded that it was one of the few alcoholic drinks exempted from Ottoman-era prohibition attempts.

Extraction & Chemistry

Extraction method: No perfumery extraction. Raki is produced by distilling grape pomace (suma) with aniseed. The aromatic note is conceptual.
