The Full Story

Fresh eccrine sweat is almost odorless: 99% water. Body-odor smell comes from apocrine sweat metabolized by skin bacteria into volatile fatty acids and steroids.

Key odorants: isovaleric acid (cheesy), trans-3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid (axillary odor), androstenone (musky or urinous depending on genetics), androstadienone (potentially pheromonal).

In perfumery, cuminaldehyde and certain musks suggest sweat at subliminal levels. The line between attractive and repulsive is entirely concentration.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
Androstenone perception is genetically determined: one-third find it pleasant (woody-musky), one-third find it repulsive (urinous), and one-third cannot smell it at all.

Extraction & Chemistry
