Scent

Immediate warm vanilla-caramel sweetness with balsamic depth. Siam type is cleaner and brighter; Sumatra type is darker with cinnamic-chocolate undertones. Richer than vanillin, less smoky than labdanum, more rounded than tolu balsam. The dry-down is soft, powdery-sweet, and persistent.

The Full Story

A resinoid obtained from the balsamic resin of Styrax trees — primarily Styrax benzoin (Sumatra type) and Styrax tonkinensis (Siam type). The Siam variety is cleaner, more vanillic; the Sumatra type is darker, more cinnamic, with a chocolate-resinous undertone.

The smell is dominated by vanillin and benzoic acid derivatives. Siam benzoin reads almost edible — warm, rounded, distinctly vanilla-caramel. Sumatra benzoin has more body: darker, slightly smoky, with styrenic and cinnamic qualities that give it a balsamic-ambery character. Both are thick, syrupy materials that cling to blotter for days.

Benzoin's primary role in perfumery is as a fixative and base-note sweetener. It extends longevity, rounds sharp edges, and provides a warm, resinous foundation. The material is central to amber accords — most commercial amber bases contain benzoin alongside labdanum and vanillin. It also appears in gourmand compositions, incense blends, and amber structures where sustained sweetness is needed without synthetic vanillin's flatness.

The word 'benzoin' derives from Arabic 'luban jawi' (Javanese frankincense), which was corrupted through Old French into 'benjamin' — hence the pharmaceutical name 'gum benjamin.' The chemical term 'benzoic acid' was literally named after this resin.

Extraction & Chemistry

Extraction method: The raw resin is collected by making incisions in Styrax tree bark. It is then dissolved in a solvent (typically ethanol or benzyl benzoate) to produce the resinoid. Yield varies by quality and origin. Sumatra benzoin tends to be available in block or 'almond' form; Siam benzoin as 'tears' — translucent amber-colored pieces that command higher prices.

Fixative and base-note sweetener. Benzoin resinoid is a cornerstone of amber accords, typically blended with labdanum, vanillin, and sometimes Peru balsam. It extends the longevity of compositions and smooths transitions between heart and base. In amber and gourmand families, it provides naturalistic vanilla-caramel warmth that synthetic vanillin cannot replicate alone. It also is a blender in incense accords, softening the sharpness of olibanum and adding body to myrrh.
