Dark, ambery-warm with a leathery-animalic depth. Labdanum resinoid is the raw, unrefined version of labdanum — darker, smokier, more untamed than the absolute.
Dark, warm, ambery with smoky-woody and green-herbaceous complexity. More raw and intense than labdanum absolute — additional smokiness, greenness, and leathery depth. The animalic-musky character is more pronounced. Richer than benzoin, smokier than tolu balsam, more untamed than amber accords. Persistent and tenacious.
Resinoid obtained by solvent extracti on of Cistus ladanifer plant material (leaves, twigs, and crude gum). The resinoid is darker and more viscous than the absolute, retaining more of the plant's waxy, green, and smoky character. It is less clean than labdanum absolute but often preferred for its raw intensity.
The scent shares the absolute's warm, ambery, animalic character but is more complex — there are additional smoky, woody, and green-herbaceous qualities from the plant material. The leathery-musky undertone is more pronounced. The resinoid is the 'full-spectrum' versi on of labdanum; the absolute is the clean extract.
In perfumery, the resinoid and absolute serve different purposes. The resinoid is used where a darker, more complex labdanum effect is desired — in leather accords, smoky ambers, and compositions where the raw, untamed character of cistus is valued.
Labdanum resinoid is sometimes called 'brown gold' in the fragrance industry. In Portuguese Alentejo and Spanish Andalusia, cistus bushes cover vast areas of otherwise marginal land, making labdanum one of the few perfumery materials where supply genuinely exceeds demand.
Extraction & Chemistry
Extraction method: Solvent extracti on of Cistus ladanifer plant material — leaves, twigs, and sometimes crude gum — using hexane or similar solvents. Less clean than the absolute (which undergoes additional washing with ethanol). The resinoid retains waxes and heavier compounds that are removed in absolute producti on. Major sourcing from Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
Base note in amber, leather, chypre, and smoky-amber compositions. Labdanum resinoid provides the full, unrefined cistus character — darker and more complex than the absolute. It is preferred in leather accords for its smoky-animalic depth, and in chypre constructions where labdanum's raw green-ambery character supports oakmoss and bergamot. Functions as a powerful fixative. The resinoid is less expensive than the absolute and used at higher concentrations.
