Dates are the fruit of Phoenix dactylifera, the date palm cultivated across the Middle East and North Africa for at least 6,000 years. The fruit yields no commercial essential oil — date notes in perfumery are reconstructed accords combining honey-caramel sweetness, dried-fruit lactones, and a faint resinous palm-syrup edge.

Scent

Warm honey-caramel opening with a dried-fruit-jammy depth. Reads as sticky-sweet, slightly resinous, with a faint nut-cream undertone. The Medjool variety profile is darker and more molasses-adjacent; Deglet Noor is lighter and more honeyed.

Drydown is sticky-sweet-warm and persistent. The honey-caramel base lasts 16+ hours on skin.

The Full Story

The date accord is a gourmand-fruit reconstruction. Built from honey (phenylacetic acid + methyl anthranilate), caramel (ethyl maltol + cyclotene), dried-fruit lactones (γ-decalactone + γ-nonalactone), and trace molecule references to actual dates (5-methyl furfural, ethyl hexanoate, β-damascenone).

Authentic date essential oil is not produced commercially — the fruit is too pulpy and sugar-rich for efficient distillation. Some niche houses use date-fruit tinctures (alcohol macerations) for trace contribution.

Dates have a strong cultural resonance in Middle Eastern and North African perfumery, frequently appearing in amber compositions referencing Arab/Persian traditions. Notable use: Lattafa Khamrah (2022, prominently date-forward), Initio Atomic Rose (dates + rose).

Did You Know?

Did you know?
Date pits unearthed at the archaeological site of Tell Abu Hureyra in Syria have been dated to approximately 7,800 BCE — making date palms among the oldest cultivated fruit trees in human history. The Arabic word for date (تمر, tamr) gave rise to the Spanish tamarindo and English tamarind through Persian intermediation, even though the two fruits are unrelated botanically.
