The Full Story

Hoya carnosa, the porcelain flower or wax plant (Hoya carnosa, Apocynaceae — the dogbane family) is a tropical Asian climbing succulent with pale, star-shaped, waxy clustered flowers that produce viscous nectar overnight. The scent is sweet, honeyed, faintly nocturnal — the flowers open in evening and release fragrance through the night. Despite its strong scent on the plant, Hoya yields nothing to commercial extraction.

In perfumery

Hoya as a fragrance note is a conceptual reconstruction. Building blocks include honey absolute (or synthetic phenylacetic acid esters), hydroxycitronellal for muguet-floral lift, methyl benzoate for the white-floral body, and γ-undecalactone for waxy substance. The accord sits in honey-floral territory, distinct from but adjacent to gardenia and tuberose.
