Scent

Lychee opens with a particular aroma that balances sweetness with a touch of tartness — closer to floral notes than to fruit alone, with rose-oxide threading through the heart and methyl 2-methylbutyrate supplying the fruity ester top. β-Damascenone deepens the floral angle; γ-decalactone supplies juicy body. The signature is unmistakable — only lychee smells like this — and it pairs naturally with rose, jasmine and tropical-fruit accords.

The Full Story

Lychee (Litchi chinensis, Sapindaceae — same family as longan and rambutan) is a small tropical fruit native to southern China, now cultivated across Southeast Asia, Madagascar and the Indian subcontinent. The aroma is unmistakable — sweet, rose-floral, slightly grape-like, with a translucent juicy quality.

Chemistry

The defining compound is cis-rose oxide (CAS 16409-43-1) [A] — a pyran isomer that delivers lychee's characteristic rose-fruity signature at parts-per-million levels. β-damascenone, linalool, and a small fraction of methyl 2-methylbutyrate complete the reconstruction palette. Lychee is one of the few tropical fruits with a relatively well-characterised volatile profile, although no commercial extract is in trade — the note is always reconstructed.

In a fragrance

Lychee is the heart-note signature of Première Peau's Rose Monotone, paired with crystalline rose, ambroxan and a transparent woody base. The composition is built on the rose-oxide / damascenone bridge that connects the fruit's rosy character to the rose absolute itself.

In Perfumery

Litchi is a heart note in perfumery, where its rich and sweet character can be fully appreciated.
