Scent

The Full Story

Marshmallow in perfumery is a synthetic illusion—the confectionery product (sugar, gelatin, corn syrup) has no extractable aromatic profile. What we perceive as 'marshmallow scent' is a memory-construct: vanilla sweetness, powdery softness, and a pillowy, almost airy quality that suggests something weightless and white.

Perfumers build the accord primarily from vanillin and ethyl vanillin (clean, sweet vanilla), ethyl maltol (cotton-candy, spun-sugar quality), and coumarin (warm, powdery softness). Some interpretations add benzoin for balsamic depth and a trace of orange blossom absolute to create the 'marshmallow = orange blossom + vanilla' equation.

The key to a convincing marshmallow accord is weightlessness. Unlike caramel (dense, dark) or praline (roasted, nutty), marshmallow must read as airy, soft, and almost textureless. This is achieved by keeping ethyl maltol at low doses and using musks and sheer materials for a floating, powdery effect.
