Scent

Cool, clean, transparently floral with a powdery-aquatic quality. Lighter than lotus, less honeyed than magnolia, less narcotic than jasmine. The aquatic context is inseparable from the flower — water lily smells like a flower and its environment simultaneously. A faint waxy quality from the petals adds body.

The Full Story

Water lily (Nymphaea) encompasses over 50 species of aquatic plants found on every continent except Antarctica. The flowers range from powerfully fragrant (N. odorata, the American white water lily) to nearly scentless, depending on species. The fragrant varieties produce a clean, sweet, transparent floral scent with a cool aquatic quality.

The scent chemistry of Nymphaea odorata includes methyl benzoate, benzaldehyde, and various terpene alcohols. The overall impression is cleaner and lighter than lotus, less complex than jonquil, with a specific pond-water freshness. Some species have a faint powdery quality.

There is no commercial water lily absolute or essential oil in significant production. The note is reconstructed in perfumery using clean floral materials, aquatic modifiers, and powdery-transparent accords. It is a common 'fantasy florals' in contemporary use — a flower idea rather than a faithful reproduction.
