Benzoin: Church Incense Turned Base Note

In the highland forests of Laos, along mountain slopes that get enough rain to sustain dense tropical cover but enough elevation to cool the air to a near-temperate mildness, grows a tree that has been deliberately wounded for centuries. The tree is Styrax tonkinensis, a medium-sized deciduous species with silvery bark and an unremarkable appearance. Left alone, it would live out its life without attracting particular notice. But it is not left alone. At intervals of roughly seven years after planting, workers notch the bark with machetes, cutting deep enough to trigger the tree's defense response. What flows from these wounds is a pale, yellowish-white resin that hardens on contact with air into brittle, fragrant tears.

This resin is benzoin. Its history is one of the quietly consequential ones in the story of aromatic materials, a substance that linked the temples of Southeast Asia to the cathedrals of medieval Europe, serving at once as incense, medicine, cosmetic, and preservative.

There are two principal types of benzoin in trade. Siam benzoin, from Styrax tonkinensis, is harvested mainly in Laos. It is considered the finer grade: lighter, richer in vanillin, softer and more delicate. Sumatra benzoin, from Styrax benzoin, comes from the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It is darker, more balsamic, with a sharper edge due to its higher cinnamic acid content.

The word "benzoin" itself carries the trace of its journey. It derives from the Arabic luban jawi, meaning "incense of Java." This was corrupted in medieval Latin to benjui, then benzoe, then benzoin. The chemical term "benzoic acid," first isolated from benzoin resin in the sixteenth century, takes its name from the same source. So does "benzene." The entire "benz-" family of chemical nomenclature traces back to a resin harvested from Southeast Asian trees and sold in Middle Eastern markets under an Arabic trade name.

In perfumery, benzoin occupies a specific and important niche. It is a base note, one of the materials providing a composition's lasting foundation. Its particular contribution is warmth. Not the bright, resinous warmth of labdanum or the smoky warmth of vetiver, but a soft, enveloping warmth that suggests the closeness of something sweet and lightly powdery.

Benzoin's vanilla-balsamic character makes it a natural partner for certain other materials. It appears frequently in amber accords. It is used in powdery compositions, where its sweetness reinforces the effect of heliotrope, iris, or violet. It also serves, and this may be its most important role, as a fixative.

The forests of Laos, where the finest Siam benzoin is produced, are no longer what they were. Deforestation has been severe. Between 1990 and 2020, Laos lost roughly 25 percent of its primary forest cover, according to data from the FAO's Global Forest Resources Assessment. Styrax trees are not immune to this pressure.

The situation in Sumatra is arguably worse. The island has seen some of the most dramatic deforestation on the planet, driven by palm oil, pulpwood, and mining.

Benzoin's sacred history deserves lingering over. When benzoin is burned in a temple, Buddhist, Hindu, or Christian, it is not consumed for its chemical properties. It is consumed for its capacity to transform a space. The smoke fills the air with a sweetness that is both balsamic and enveloping. The neurological basis for this effect is well documented: vanillin and related compounds activate olfactory receptors in ways the brain associates with warmth, safety, and food.

Synthetic alternatives to benzoin are adequate for most commercial uses. Vanillin can be produced more cheaply from lignin or guaiacol. But natural benzoin contains trace compounds, minor constituents that influence the overall character of the scent. These traces are, in a sense, the tree's autobiography, a chemical record of its life written in molecules. Synthetic vanillin has no autobiography.

There is a Laotian village called Ban Na Ouane, in Luang Prabang province, where benzoin has been harvested for at least four hundred years. The trees grow on the slopes above the village, in a forest that has been managed, not preserved in a pristine state, but actively managed through cycles of planting, tapping, and renewal, for generations. The knowledge of when to cut, how deep, which trees to tap and which to leave, that knowledge passes orally, from parents to children.

This system is fragile. It depends on continuity. When a generation of young people leaves the village for urban jobs, the knowledge leaves with them, or rather, does not leave with them, because it cannot be packed into a suitcase.

The incense of churches. The base note of a thousand perfumes. The etymological root of an entire family of chemical compounds. A sacred material in secular decline, seeping from wounded trees in forests that shrink every year. Benzoin asks the same question as Haitian vetiver and Comorian ylang-ylang: what do we owe the places our materials come from? Not as a marketing exercise, not as a story printed on a box, but as a real debt, payable in something more tangible than gratitude.

The smoke rises. The forests shrink. The question remains open.
