Niche perfume means a house that makes fragrance and nothing else, sells through its own doors and a short list of stockists, and lets the perfumer decide the formula rather than a marketing brief. It does not mean expensive, and it does not mean obscure. It means the juice was the point.

Premiere Peau is a niche perfume house in that sense: independent, Paris based, seven compositions by four perfumers, every one of them an extrait de parfum at 20 percent. No eau de toilette, no flankers, no celebrity licence. The materials are named because they can be: Greek saffron, Italian and French iris, Alba white truffle, Haitian vetiver, Croatian immortelle, jasmine sambac picked at night.

The seven are listed below by note. If you are new to the house, the discovery set is the honest entry: seven 2 ml vials of the same juice as the bottle, worn one a day, and the price credited toward whichever one stays.

What is a niche perfume?

A fragrance from an independent house whose main business is perfume, made in small runs, sold through its own channels and selected stockists, with the perfumer rather than a marketing department deciding the formula.

Why is niche perfume more expensive?

Smaller batches, higher concentration and costlier raw materials. A 20 percent extrait built on orris butter or jasmine absolute costs more to make per millilitre than a mass market eau de toilette, and the price is not spread across millions of bottles.

How do I choose a niche perfume without smelling it first?

Buy samples. Premiere Peau sells all seven compositions as 2 ml vials in a discovery set; wear one a day for a week and the dry down decides. The set price is credited toward a full bottle.

Is Premiere Peau a French niche perfume brand?
