Heart
A subarctic berry (Rubus arcticus) with an intense rose-like aroma — the most fragrant of the bramble family. A fantasy note in perfumery; no commercial oil or absolute exists.
The reconstructed accord opens with a bright, almost sparkling fruitiness — berry-forward but with an unmistakable rosy lift that separates it from generic red-fruit accords. There is a tartness, like the first bite of a berry that is not quite fully ripe, and a faint green stem-like freshness.
Over the first hour the rose character becomes more prominent. The fruitiness softens into something rounder, less acidic. A faint herbal note — thyme-like, or perhaps the cold, mineral quality of subarctic air — threads through the sweetness.
On a blotter after a day: a soft, dry fruitiness remains, more suggestion than statement. The rose note lingers longest.

The Full Story
Arctic bramble (Rubus arcticus) is a low-growing perennial found across Scandinavia, Finland, Russia, and northern Canada. It should not be confused with cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus), which is a different species with a different scent profile — cloudberry is more citrus-musky, while arctic bramble carries a striking rose-like character unusual for a berry.
The fruit ripens in late July to August and is deep red, small, and fragile. It is considered a delicacy in Finland and Sweden, where it appears in liqueurs (notably mesimarja liqueur) and preserves. The aroma of the fresh fruit is intense — floral and fruity simultaneously, with a clarity that has drawn comparisons to the finest Bulgarian rose.
No commercial essential oil or absolute of arctic bramble exists for perfumery. The note is a fantasy accord, typically reconstructed using rose oxide, fruity esters, and berry lactones.
