The Full Story

Australian Blue Cypress is derived from the wood of Callitris intratropica, a tree native to the northern regions of Australia. It is valued for its aromatic properties and its resilience to the harsh Australian climate. Indigenous Australians have traditionally used the wood for tools and shelters, and the oil is now used in perfumery.

Origin and Production

In perfumery, Australian Blue Cypress is a warm, woody note with subtle green and sweet hints. The oil is obtained by steam distillation of the wood.

Chemistry and Scent Profile

Australian Blue Cypress is also noted for its sustainability. The trees are cultivated in managed forests, supporting responsible harvesting. This means Australian Blue Cypress is sustainably sourced, in line with the demand for ethically sourced ingredients in luxury fragrances.

In Perfumery

Australian blue cypress (Callitris intratropic a) is a base note yielding a particular blue oil due to high guaiazulene content. Its scent is woody-smoky with a sweet, almost honey-like undertone — drier and more mineral than Virginian cedarwood, less camphoric than Atlas cedar. Functions as a fixative in woody and incense compositions. The guaiazulene content (which gives the blue col or) also imparts anti-inflammatory properties exploited in aromatherapy. Works alongside vetiver, patchouli, and oud in dark-woody accords. At low dosage, it adds a clean, almost metallic-woody transparency.
