Coal tar is a viscous black liquid produced by the destructive distillation (coking) of coal at 600-1200C. It contains hundreds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenolic compounds. The characteristic smell comes from naphthalene (mothballs), phenol (carbolic acid), cresols (medicinal), and various pyridine derivatives.
In perfumery, coal tar is a transgressive, industrial note used in dark, urban, and avant-garde compositions. The smell is immediately recognisable: hot asphalt, creosote-treated railway sleepers, old-fashioned antiseptic soap. At trace levels, naphthalene and guaiacol can add a subconscious urban-industrial depth to leather and smoke accords.
Functionally, coal tar works as a dark base-note modifier. It provides industrial grimness and urban character. Many classic leather accords historically incorporated birch tar (a related but distinct material); coal tar takes the concept further into industrial territory.

The entire synthetic dye industry -- and by extension, modern organic chemistry -- began with coal tar. In 1856, 18-year-old William Henry Perkin accidentally synthesised mauveine (the first synthetic dye) from coal-tar aniline while trying to make quinine. His discovery launched a revolution that would eventually produce most of modern perfumery's synthetic molecules.

Extraction method: Coal tar is a by-product of coal coking (destructive distillation at 600-1200C). Fractional distillation of crude coal tar yields various aromatic fractions.
