Scent

Transparent floral-green. The first impressi on is a bright magnoli a-peony character with citrusy grapefru it qualities -- clean and lifting rather than heavy. Behind the floral core sits a faint indolic depth and a lychee-like sweetness. Less dense than tuberose materials, less sweet than muguet aldehydes, more naturalistic than Hedione. A floralizer's floralizer.

The Full Story

Magnolan (CAS 27606-09-3) is a a global fragrance supplier floral-green molecule with the structure 2,4-dimethyl-4,4a,5,9b-tetrahydroindeno[1,2-d][1,3]dioxine (C13H16O2). First introduced in the 1960s by Haarmann & Reimer (which later merged into a global fragrance supplier), it has remained a workhorse floralizer for over half a century.

The scent is transparent and multi-faceted: magnoli a and peony at the core, with lychee-like fruitiness and grapefru it nuances in the top notes. A subtle indolic undertone gives it depth without heaviness. This combinati on makes Magnolan unusually adaptable -- it works in white florals, fruity compositions, citrus accords, and clean functional products.

Magnolan has medium odor strength and excellent stability across applications, from fine fragrance to fabric softeners. Its substantivity on fabric and hard surfaces makes it particularly effective in household products.

In Perfumery

Magnolan functions as a floralizer and white-floral modifier. It adds luminosity, transparency, and volume to magnolia, peony, and lily-of-the-valley accords. Used at 1-5% in fine fragrance concentrates to give lift and sparkle to floral compositions. Also used extensively in functional perfumery for fabric softeners and laundry detergents where long-lasting floral freshness on textiles is required.
