Solvent extraction of Magnolia champaca flowers with hexane or ethanol produces champaca absolute — yield roughly 1.0% by weight (100 kg of fresh flowers per 1 kg of absolute). CO2 supercritical extraction provides a cleaner, more faithful olfactory profile at similar yields. The traditional South Asian method — attar production — distills champaca flowers into a sandalwood oil receiver using copper stills (degh-bhapka), a process lasting up to ten hours per batch, repeated over several days with fresh flowers. Champaca flowers are fragile and short-lived (often picked before dawn), making all extraction methods labor-intensive.

The absolute provides body, lactonic roundness, and a tea-like refinement that thinner white-flower materials lack — it fills the space between jasmine's indolic push and ylang-ylang's tropical sweetness. In soliflore work, magnolia's lemony-floral character gives it a self-sufficient quality: it needs less structural scaffolding than jasmine or tuberose. Commercial magnolia accords typically combine hydroxycitronellal (waxy, linden-like), heliotropin (powdery-sweet), benzyl salicylate (diffusive floral base), and linalool. The essential oil is not a fixative — its linalool dominance places it firmly in the heart-to-top range — but the absolute, with its heavier molecular fraction, contributes moderate tenacity. CO2 extraction has improved access to the natural material, though champaca absolute remains expensive.
