Sharp, phenolic, and warm — like holding your coat near a dying campfire. The guaiacol component delivers a medicinal-smoky bite; the syringol softens it into something sweeter, almost ham-like. The Full Story
Smoke in perfumery is the controlled deployment of pyrolysis chemistry. When wood burns, the thermal degradation of lignin produces a cascade of phenolic compounds: guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol) delivers the core smoky-medicinal character, syringol (2,6-dimethoxyphenol) adds a sweeter, less harsh smokiness, and various cresols and xylenols contribute the sharp, almost chemical edge. These molecules are the alphabet from which all smoke notes are written.
The two primary natural sources are birch tar oil (CAS 8001-88-5) and cade oil (CAS 8013-10-3). Birch tar — produced by dry distillation of birch bark at 400-600 C in the absence of oxygen — delivers a sharp, leathery-phenolic smokiness historically known as "Russian leather." Cade oil — from the dry distillation of Juniperus oxycedrus wood — is warmer, more resinous, and less aggressively phenolic. Both are complex mixtures: birch tar contains over 200 identified compounds.
Synthetic options extend the palette. Guaiacol and syringol are available as isolates. Isobutyl quinoline provides a burnt-leather quality. Castoreum bases (synthetic) add a smoky-animalic quality. Iso E Super, while not explicitly smoky, contributes a dry, cedar-incense quality that reads as smoke-adjacent in certain contexts. Modern smoke accords often layer cade oil with guaiacol, a touch of birch tar rectified, and synthetic fixatives to control the note's tendency toward medicinal harshness.
Hardwood smoke and softwood smoke smell different because of lignin chemistry. Hardwood lignin contains syringyl units that produce syringol (sweeter, less harsh) upon pyrolysis. Softwood lignin contains guaiacyl units that produce guaiacol (sharper, more medicinal). This is why oak smoke smells warmer than pine smoke — and why perfumers specify wood type when sourcing cade or birch tar oils.

Extraction method: Primary natural sources: birch tar oil obtained by pyrolysis (destructive distillation) of birch bark at 400-600 C in oxygen-free conditions, yielding a dark, tarry liquid rich in guaiacol and phenols. Cade oil obtained by similar pyrolysis of Juniperus oxycedrus heartwood. Both are typically rectified (redistilled) to remove heavy tar fractions and reduce carcinogenic PAH content. Synthetic route: guaiacol and syringol are produced industrially from guaiacum resin or by methylation of catechol with dimethyl sulfate.
