Heart
Waxy, honeyed, slightly animalic. Apis mellifera — not honey itself but the hive: beeswax, propolis, pollen, and the warm animal smell of a living colony.
Warm, waxy-honeyed, with a slight animal muskiness and a resinous propolis edge. More complex than honey alone — the beeswax adds a thick, golden richness; the propolis adds a dark, resinous undertone; the pollen contributes dusty sweetness. The overall impression is of a warm, living space — not clean or clinical, but organic and comforting.

The Full Story
The western honey bee (Apis mellifera) note in perfumery refers not to honey alone but to the complete olfactory environment of a beehive: beeswax (warm, honeyed), propolis (resinous, slightly medicinal), pollen (dusty, sweet), royal jelly (slightly acidic), and the pheromone-rich air of tens of thousands of living bees.
Bee pheromones include geraniol, citral, neral, and isopentyl acetate (the alarm pheromone, which smells like banana). Queen mandibular pheromone (QMP) contains 9-ODA and 9-HDA, fatty-acid-derived compounds with a faint waxy-floral quality. The combined effect is complex and alive — a warm, waxy, slightly animal smell.
In perfumery, the note is built from beeswax absolute (the primary material), honey accords, propolis tincture, and traces of pollen-dusty materials. It carries apiaries, gardens, and the particular warmth of an insect colony.
A healthy beehive maintains an internal temperature of 34-36 degrees C year-round, regulated by worker bees fanning their wings or clustering together. This constant warmth is why opening a hive releases such a powerful burst of aroma — it is like opening an oven of accumulated volatiles.
Extraction & Chemistry
Extraction method: Beeswax absolute is obtained by solvent extraction of Apis mellifera beeswax. Propolis tincture is made by macerating propolis in ethanol. Honey absolute can be produced by solvent extraction but is rarely used due to cost. These materials combined approximate the full-hive experience.

In Perfumery
The western honey bee note is a heart-to-base accord providing warm, waxy-honeyed-animalic character. Built from beeswax absolute, honey materials, propolis tincture, and dusty-sweet pollen accords. Functions in honey-themed, garden, and warm-animalic compositions. More complex than simple honey accords, with the beeswax and propolis adding depth. Pairs with floral naturals, labdanum, and amber bases.
