Scent

Rich, musky orange blossom. The floral character is narcotic and slightly indolic, resembling neroli but with a warmer, muskier foundation. Less grape-like than methyl anthranilate, more rounded and stable. The musky undertone is soft and enveloping rather than animalic. Exceptionally substantive -- it lingers on skin and fabric long after lighter orange-blossom materials fade.

The Full Story

Florantone T (CAS 774-55-0, 1-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalen-2-yl)ethanone) is a synthetic material known for ability to replicate methyl anthranilate's rich, narcotic orange-flower character without the latter's tendency to discol or formulations and react with other ingredients.

Methyl anthranilate -- the molecule responsible for the grape-like, indolic quality of neroli and orange blossom -- is notoriously reactive. It forms Schiff bases with aldehydes, causing yellowing and off-notes in aging compositions. Florantone T sidesteps these problems entirely while delivering a comparable musky, orange-blossom richness.

The molecule also carries a pronounced musky quality and notable substantivity, making it useful as both a floral modifier and a soft musk component. Unlike methyl anthranilate, it remains liquid at normal temperatures, making it easier to handle in production.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
Methyl anthranilate is responsible for both the grape scent in Concord grape juice and the narcotic quality of orange blossom absolute. Florantone T captures only the orange-blossom side of this dual personality, leaving the grape behind.

In Perfumery

Florantone T functions as a methyl anthranilate replacement and musky-floral modifier. Used in orange blossom accords, neroli compositions, and any formula where methyl anthranilate's reactivity causes stability problems. Its musk-like substantivity makes it effective as a fixative in floral compositions. Useful in leather, rosy, red fruit, and woody accords.
