The Full Story
Indian oud oil comes primarily from Aquilaria agallocha (syn. A. malaccensis) harvested in Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern Indian states. The resin forms as a defense response to fungal infection (Phialophora parasitica), darkening the heartwood over decades. Indian oud is generally considered the most intense and animalic of all oud origins.
The oil's chemistry is dominated by sesquiterpenes — agarol, agarospirol, jinkohol, and various guaianes. What distinguishes Indian oud from Cambodian or Laotian varieties is the pronounced animalic, barnyard character in the opening: sharp, almost fecal, with sweaty-leathery undertones. This intensity is why Indian oud is typically used in small doses even in Middle Eastern mukhallat compositions.
Genuine Indian oud oil commands prices of $20,000-$50,000/kg depending on grade and age. Plantation-grown oud from inoculated trees is increasingly common but produces a lighter, less complex profile than old-growth wild-harvested material.
Only an estimated 2% of wild Aquilaria trees develop the fungal infection that produces agarwood resin. The remaining 98% contain no oud — their wood is odorless and commercially worthless.
Extraction & Chemistry
Extraction method: Steam or hydrodistillation of infected Aquilaria heartwood. Distillation of high-grade wood can take 3-7 days. Yield is extremely low: roughly 0.1-0.3% from quality agarwood. CO2 extraction produces a different, more transparent profile. Wild-harvested wood is increasingly rare; most commercial oud now comes from plantation trees inoculated with fungal cultures.
Indian oud functions as a base note of extreme tenacity. In perfumery, it is used sparingly as an animalic modifier — adding depth, darkness, and rawness to compositions. It is foundational in amber, leather, and animalic fragrance families. Used in trace amounts, it can give a composition a sense of age and mystery without being identifiable as oud.
