The Full Story
Essential oil distilled from the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees (primarily A. malaccensis, A. crassna, A. sinensis) infected by Phialophora parasitica mold. The infection triggers a defensive resin production — agarwood — which transforms the pale, odorless wood into dark, fragrant, extraordinarily valuable material.
Oud oil is arguably the most complex and polarizing material in perfumery. Its scent ranges wildly by origin: Cambodi oud (Cambodia) tends to be sweet, fruity, almost caramelized. Hindi oud (India, Assam) is dark, animalic, leathery, almost fecal at high concentration. Malinau/Borneo oud is greener, more herbal. The chemistry is dominated by sesquiterpenes (agarospirol, jinkoh-eremol) and chromone derivatives — hundreds of volatile compounds have been identified.
In Western perfumery, oud has been the defining trend ingredient of the 2010s-2020s. Most 'oud' fragrances use synthetic reconstructions (a major aroma-chemical supplier's Oud Synthetic, a Swiss fragrance house's Agarwood Base) rather than natural oil, which can cost $20,000-100,000+ per kilogram for high-quality material.
A single kilogram of high-grade wild Hindi oud oil has sold for over $100,000, making it more expensive per gram than gold. The most prized agarwood — 'sinking grade' or 'chen xiang' (沉香) — is dense enough to sink in water, indicating complete resinous saturation of the wood fibers.
Extraction & Chemistry
Extraction method: Steam distillation or hydrodistillation of infected agarwood chips, typically over 48-72 hours. Yield is extremely low — approximately 0.1-0.7% depending on resin density. CO2 extraction captures a different, often smoother profile. The raw material itself is the bottleneck: natural infection rates are very low (perhaps 7-10% of wild trees), and plantation inoculation techniques produce variable results. Major producing countries include India (Assam), Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Indonesia.
Base note and signature ingredient in amber, woody-ambery, and Middle Eastern compositions. Natural oud functions as both a character note and a powerful fixative. In traditional Arabian perfumery (mukhallat), oud is the central element. In Western perfumery, synthetic oud bases are used to provide the dark, woody-animalic character at accessible price points. Oud pairs with rose (the classic Arabian combination), saffron, sandalwood, and amber.
