Lighter and more citrus-forward than Southern magnolia. A green, cucumber-like freshness from the acuminata parentage. Lemony-clean rather than heavy-creamy. Less narcotic, less waxy, more translucent. The floral sweetness is present but restrained by the green-citrus elements.

The Full Story
Magnolia x brooklynensis is a hybrid magnolia created by crossing Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia acuminata at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in the 1950s. The cultivars (including the well-known 'Yellow Bird') produce flowers with a lighter, more citrus-forward scent than the heavy, creamy fragrance of Magnolia grandiflora.
The scent profile reflects the hybrid's parentage: the softness of M. liliflora's lily-magnolia quality meets the green, cucumber-like freshness of M. acuminata (cucumber tree). The result is a magnolia that smells cleaner and more lemony than what most people associate with the genus.
In perfumery, this note is natural but rarely extracted. The accord provides a fresher, less narcotic magnolia alternative. It functions as a heart note in light-floral, green-floral, and spring compositions where the heaviness of Magnolia grandiflora would be inappropriate.

Magnolia x brooklynensis was one of the first successful magnolia hybrids created in cultivation. The original crosses were made by Eva Maria Sperber at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden starting in 1954. The cultivar 'Yellow Bird' became one of the first truly yellow-flowered magnolias hardy enough for northern gardens.
Extraction & Chemistry
Extraction method: Not commercially extracted. The hybrid is represented in perfumery through combinations of magnolia materials with green-citrus modifiers to approximate its lighter, fresher character.
Magnolia brooklynensis is a natural heart note providing lighter, more citrus-forward magnolia character. It offers a cleaner alternative to heavy Magnolia grandiflora in spring and light-floral compositions. The hybrid's green-citrus qualities make it useful where magnolia is desired without narcotic heaviness. Rarely extracted; typically represented through blending magnolia and green-citrus materials.
