Scent

White-floral, green, and faintly musky. Like pressing your nose to a branch of pear blossom in April -- the petals are clean and cool, but underneath there is a warm, slightly animal muskiness that adds intrigue. Less sweet than cherry blossom, less bright than apple blossom. Quiet and real.

The Full Story

Pear blossom (Pyrus communis) is a spring-blooming flower from the Rosaceae family. Unlike the fruit, which carries a distinctive esters-and-ethanol aroma, the blossom has a quiet, white-floral character that is both delicate and slightly unusual.

The flowers have a faintly musky, almost animalic quality that distinguishes them from other spring blossoms. This is not unpleasant -- it is a soft, skin-like warmth that adds complexity to the light, green-white floral impression. Some species of pear blossom are pollinated by flies rather than bees, and the subtle trimethylamine edge in their scent (a molecule also found in fish and hawthorn flowers) serves this purpose.

Pear blossoms are not commercially extracted for perfumery. The note is a fantasy accord, built from clean white-floral materials, green notes, and a subtle musky-animalic thread.

In a composition, pear blossom sits in the top-to-heart range. It provides a naturalistic, spring-orchard freshness that feels more real than most floral fantasy notes.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
Many pear species produce flowers with a faintly fishy or musky smell (from trimethylamine) that attracts flies as pollinators. The hawthorn, a close relative, shares this characteristic. Medieval Europeans noted the similarity between hawthorn scent and decay, leading to superstitions about bringing the flowers indoors.
