The Full Story

Phlox (Phlox paniculata, garden phlox) is a North American perennial wildflower that has become a cottage garden staple. Unlike many ornamental flowers bred for appearance, garden phlox retains a genuine, detectable fragrance: sweet, honeyed, and softly spicy with a warm, clove-like undertone.

The scent profile of phlox varies by cultivar, but the common thread is a warm, honey-sweet floral with spicy (eugenol-adjacent) and slightly powdery elements. It is not as heavy as tuberose, not as bright as lily, and not as green as freesia -- it occupies a middle ground: a garden flower that smells like home.

Phlox is not commercially extracted for perfumery. The note is a fantasy accord, reconstructed using honey-sweet florals, traces of eugenol (clove-spice), powdery heliotropin, and clean musky elements.

In a composition, phlox functions in the heart, providing a warm, cottage-garden warmth.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
Phlox paniculata is one of the few temperate garden flowers whose scent intensifies on hot afternoons. The warmth volatilizes the essential oils in the petals, creating a fragrant cloud above the flower border -- gardeners sometimes plant phlox near windows specifically to catch this summer afternoon scent.
