Soft, velvety, woody-musky. Velvione is a macrocyclic musk ketone that smells like warm cashmere — powdery-soft, with a woody undertone and none of the sweetness of white musks.

Scent

Soft, velvety, woody-warm, faintly powdery. Less sweet than white musk accords, more textural — the smell suggests the touch of velvet or cashmere. Drier and more woody than typical lactone musks. Like the scent that lingers on a cashmere sweater after a day of wear — warm, personal, barely detectable, entirely enveloping.

The Full Story

Velvione is a proprietary macrocyclic musk ketone developed by a Swiss fragrance house. It is characterized by its soft, velvety, woody-musky character — less sweet than Galaxolide (polycyclic), less fruity than Helvetolide, more woody-textural than Habanolide. The name directly references its defining quality: velvet-like softness.

Macrocyclic musk ketones occupy a specific niche within the musk family — they tend to be warmer, drier, and more textural than musk lactones (Exaltolide, Habanolide) or polycyclic musks (Galaxolide, Tonalide). Velvione sits alongside natural muscone (from musk deer) in this ketone category.

The shift toward macrocyclic musks in contemporary use is driven by both environmental concerns (polycyclic musks are persistent environmental pollutants) and aesthetic preference (macrocyclics smell more natural and skin-like).

In formulation, Velvione provides a textural, cashmere-like base note that adds softness and warmth without sweetness — particularly valued in minimalist, woody, and skin-scent compositions.

Natural muscone — a reference for macrocyclic musk ketones like Velvione — was first synthesized by Leopold Ruzicka in 1926, work that contributed to his 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research on polymethylenes and higher terpenes.

Extraction & Chemistry

Extraction method: Fully synthetic — a Swiss fragrance house proprietary synthesis. Macrocyclic ketone chemistry. No natural equivalent, though it occupies similar olfactory territory to natural muscone (from Moschus moschiferus, the musk deer — now CITES-protected).

In Perfumery

Velvione (a Swiss fragrance house) is a macrocyclic musk ketone providing soft, velvety, woody-musky base character. Positioned in the natural-muscone territory — warm, dry, textural. Used in cashmere-type accords, minimalist compositions, and skin-scent fragrances. Excellent blending properties — adds softness without sweetness. Part of the industry shift from polycyclic to macrocyclic musks (better biodegradability, more natural odor).
