Amber is not a material. No tree bleeds it, no flower carries it, no animal secretes it. What you smell when a bottle says amber is a recipe — a nineteenth-century arrangement of resins and one industrial molecule, named after a fossil that has almost nothing to do with it. The confusion is three-way and it is old: fossil amber, the amber accord and ambergris are three unrelated substances wearing one word. What follows sorts them apart, takes the accord to pieces, and gives you a method for separating a built amber from a thin one on a blotter.

Three Substances, One Word
The English word arrives from Arabic ʿanbar, through Middle Persian ambar, Middle Latin ambar and Middle French ambre. In its original sense it meant one thing: ambergris, the waxy concretion that forms in the gut of the sperm whale and washes up on beaches. Not the stone. The whale.
From the late thirteenth century, Romance-language speakers applied the same word to the fossil resin washing up on Baltic shores. Both came out of the sea, both were rare, both were burned for scent. The language grew adjectives to separate them: ambre gris, grey amber, for the whale product, and ambre jaune, yellow amber, for the fossil. The yellow one eventually took the plain word and the grey one kept its adjective. That is why English says ambergris and means a whale.
Then perfumery invented a third thing and gave it the same word. Neither of the first two is what you are wearing.

The Fossil That Never Made It Into a Bottle
Baltic amber is properly called succinite, because it carries between 3 and 8 percent succinic acid. It began as conifer resin, and over tens of millions of years it did the one thing that disqualifies it from perfumery: it polymerised. The volatile fraction — the part that smells — left long ago. What remains is a hard, cross-linked solid that will not dissolve in ethanol.
You can force a fragrant material out of it. Dry distillation — controlled anaerobic burning at high temperature — breaks the polymer down and yields rosin, succinic acid and a dark oil sold as amber oil. It smells of pine tar and campfire, closer to birch tar than to anything ambery, and it does not go into alcohol cleanly. It turns up in incense work. It is not the basis of any commercial amber accord, and never was.
The stone gave the accord its name and nothing else. The word travelled. The substance stayed in the ground.
An accord is not a mixture of things that smell like the target. It is a structure that produces a smell none of its parts has. One plus one equals three, and here is why.
The Accord: Two Resins and a Patent
The amber accord has a spine: two natural resins plus one synthetic. Remove any of the three and it stops reading as amber.
Labdanum is the dark, sticky gum of Cistus ladanifer, the rockrose of Mediterranean scrubland. Herodotus described its collection in Histories 3.112: the Arabians call it ladanon, he writes, and this most sweet-scented of things is found in the most evil-scented place, the beards of he-goats that have browsed the bushes. On Crete, harvesters still drag the ladanisterion — a wooden rake strung with leather thongs — through cistus at midday when the resin runs. Industrially the branches are boiled in soda solution, liberating roughly 3 to 5 percent crude gum. That gum becomes a labdanum resinoid or, after further treatment, a labdanum absolute. It smells of leather, dried fruit, hot stone and animal skin at once, and carries more amber character alone than any other material.
Benzoin supplies the sweetness. Siam benzoin, tapped from Styrax tonkinensis in Laos and northern Vietnam, runs 65 to 75 percent coniferyl benzoate, roughly 6 percent siaresinolic acid, and about 1 percent vanillin. That last one percent is why benzoin resinoid reads as vanilla to almost everyone smelling it for the first time. It is also a fixative: it slows the whole structure down.
Labdanum is harvested by animals that have no idea they are working. The resin that goats collect without knowing.
Vanillin is the piece that made the accord possible, and it has a date. On 10 April 1874, Ferdinand Tiemann and Wilhelm Haarmann patented a synthesis of vanillin from coniferin, a glucoside found in conifer bark, and began industrial production in Holzminden. Before that patent, vanilla character meant vanilla pods, which were scarce and unstable. After it, a perfumer could pour warmth into a base by the gram. François Coty's Ambre Antique, 1905, is generally credited as the first modern amber composition, and it ran on exactly this arithmetic — a resinous body lifted by an overdose of vanillin and bergamot.
Styrax is the optional fourth. Tapped from Liquidambar orientalis in Turkey, it is dominated by cinnamic acid derivatives: 33 to 50 percent storesin, 5 to 15 percent cinnamic acid, 5 to 15 percent cinnamyl cinnamate, around 10 percent phenylpropyl cinnamate. Styrax resinoid pushes the accord toward leather and tar. It is what separates a dark amber from a soft one.

What Amber Smells Like, Register by Register
Ask five people what amber smells like and you get five answers, all partly right, because the accord occupies five registers at once. Reading them separately is the whole skill.
Resinous and dry. The labdanum spine. Hot stone, dry sap, something faintly bitter behind the sweetness. This is the register that stops amber from being dessert. In a well-built composition you should find it within ten minutes on skin, sitting under everything else like a floor.
Balsamic and sweet. Benzoin and vanillin together. Not sugar — balsamic sweetness is thicker and slower, closer to dried fruit than to caramel. When people say an amber smells warm, this is what they mean. It is also the register that gets overdosed.
Animalic and leathery. Labdanum carries it natively; styrax amplifies it. It reads as skin, worn leather, a trace of something that has been alive. Classic ambers reinforced it with castoreum or civet. Modern ones reach for synthetic musk, which is why contemporary amber smells clean where a 1920s amber smelled like a body.
Powdery. An artefact of vanillin plus tonka bean or coumarin. This is where amber tips into what people call old-fashioned. Whether that is a flaw depends entirely on the dose.
Smoky. Optional but common. Frankincense, myrrh or opoponax pull the accord toward incense. This is the axis niche houses have pushed hardest since 2010.
Add patchouli and you get the chypre-adjacent amber. Add sandalwood and you get woody amber. Add beeswax and you get something that reads as skin at three feet. The accord is a chassis. What gets bolted to it decides everything.
Amber Is Not Ambergris, and Ambroxan Is Neither
Ambergris smells nothing like the amber accord. No sweetness, no resin, no vanilla. It reads marine, mineral, faintly faecal at close range and luminous at distance — a radiance rather than a note. Its odour rests on ambrein, a triterpene alcohol, flanked by the steroid alcohol epicoprostanol and the ketone coprostanone. Ambrein itself is odourless. Sunlight, seawater and oxygen degrade it over years into smaller molecules, and those are what you smell.
The most important is ambroxide. In 1950, Max Stoll and Max Hinder at Firmenich achieved its first semi-synthesis, starting not from a whale but from sclareol, a diterpene alcohol recovered from the distillation residues of clary sage. Oxidative degradation of the side chain gives sclareolide; reduction and cyclisation close the ring. The product is C16H28O, 236.4 g/mol, now one of the most-used molecules in the industry.
The naming is where everything falls apart. Ambroxide is the chemistry. Ambroxan was introduced by Henkel and is now a Kao trademark, supplied as a single enantiomer. Cetalox is Firmenich's racemic version of the same scaffold, warmer and creamier for it. Ambrox Super is another Firmenich variant. Four names, one molecular family, no relationship to labdanum or benzoin. A fragrance called ambery because it holds ambroxan and one called ambery because it holds an amber accord will not smell remotely alike.
Adoption spread through the 1970s and accelerated after the sperm whale was listed on CITES Appendix I in 1975. The commercial logic was decisive. The olfactory result was a generation of fragrances that project like ambergris and smell nothing like amber.

Cheap Amber Versus Built Amber
A thin amber is thin because of what it omits, not what it contains. Sweetness is the easiest part of the accord to overdose, so a shortcut amber tends to be vanillin plus ethyl maltol plus a synthetic amberwood, with the labdanum reduced to a token. It smells correct for ninety seconds, then stops moving.
The blotter test. Spray a paper strip and read it at three moments. At two minutes you are smelling solvent — ignore it. At thirty minutes, ask whether anything dry has appeared under the sweetness. If not, there is no labdanum worth the name in the formula. At six hours, ask whether the sweetness has changed shape. A built amber goes sweet, then leathery, then skin-like. A shortcut amber holds the same shape at hour six as at minute thirty, only quieter.
The flatness test. Smell it, look away for ten seconds, smell again. If the second pass gives you nothing new, the composition has one dimension. Real resins are messy — dozens of constituents in unequal proportion — and messiness reads to the nose as movement.
The sweetness ceiling. Ethyl maltol has a very low odour threshold and an unmistakable profile: burnt sugar, candyfloss. Once you can identify it you cannot unlearn it, and you will find it in a startling proportion of things marketed as amber. It is not a flaw in itself. It becomes one when it does the work three other materials should be doing.
None of this is a verdict on a house or a tier. Ambers at every level can be flat, and ambers at every level can be structured. The question is whether the accord was built or simulated.

Wearing It
Amber rewards cold air. The accord is heavy in molecular weight and slow to evaporate, so in summer heat it can read as suffocating and in January as exactly right. Apply less than you think, and apply it low — sternum, inner elbow — not at the neck, where the sweetness concentrates.
One piece of vocabulary worth knowing: until recently this family was called oriental. In June 2021, Michael Edwards announced that Fragrances of the World would replace the term with amber across its English-language classifications from that July, splitting the family into Floral Amber, Soft Amber, Amber and Woody Amber. The renaming was overdue. It also had a side effect: a family name and an accord name now share one word. Read labels accordingly.
