Cold mineral lily-of-the-valley. Sun-dried linen in winter air -- a muguet stripped of sweetness and filled with light.

Scent

Cold, mineral, and crystalline. Like smelling a just-ironed white cotton shirt in a room with the windows open in January. The muguet quality is present but stripped of sweetness -- all stems and green water, no honey. More aldehydic and radiant than Hydroxycitronellal, less creamy than the now-banned Lilial. Notable substantivity on fabric.

The Full Story

Hivernal Neo (CAS 300371-33-9) is a a major aroma-chemical supplier indane aldehyde designed to deliver powerful aldehydic-muguet character with notable longevity. The molecule replaces the fatty, slightly oily qualities of its predecessor Lilial with a cold, mineral freshness that reads as 'white linen' and 'winter air.'

The name references chemist Beat Winter ('Hiver' means winter in French), and the cold, crisp quality of the molecule. It is structurally related to Lilial but chemically distinct -- a dihydro-indene propanal that avoids the regulatory issues that led to Lilial's EU ban in 2022.

Hivernal Neo fills a critical gap in the post-Lilial perfumer's palette. Where Lilial was soft and creamy, Hivernal Neo is bright and mineral. Where Lyral was honeyed and sweet, Hivernal Neo is clean and almost astringent. It works in modern clean compositions, fresh florals, and white musk accords where transparency and longevity are both required.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
When the EU banned Lilial (Butylphenyl Methylpropional) in March 2022, Hivernal Neo became a sought-after replacement molecules overnight. Its inventor, Beat Winter, inadvertently named it after himself -- 'hivernal' derives from the French for winter.

In Perfumery

Hivernal Neo functions as a top-to-heart muguet modifier and aldehydic brightener. It is one of the key replacements for the banned Lilial and Lyral molecules, offering lily-of-the-valley character with clean, mineral transparency. Used in white floral accords, clean musks, fresh-linen compositions, and modern aldehydic fragrances. Its long-lasting diffusion makes it effective in both fine fragrance and functional perfumery.
