CAS 80-56-8. A bicyclic monoterpene and an abundant terpenes in nature. Alpha-pinene is the dominant volatile in pine resin, and is found at significant levels in rosemary, eucalyptus, frankincense, and dozens of other essential oils. It is the single most produced terpene by plants globally.
The scent is sharply piney, fresh, and turpenic. It reads as clean, bright, and coniferous — the immediate, unmistakable smell of a pine forest. At high concentrations, a solvent-like harshness appears; at typical perfumery levels, it is crisp and invigorating. The molecule is a top note with high volatility (boiling point 156°C) and rapid evaporation.
In perfumery, alpha-pinene is more often a component of essential oils (pine, rosemary, cypress, juniper) than used as an isolated molecule. Its primary value is as a contributor to the 'fresh-green-coniferous' character of these oils. When used as an isolate, it provides sharp piney freshness but must be blended carefully to avoid a turpentine-like impression.

This massive emission contributes to the blue haze visible over forested mountains (hence 'Blue Ridge Mountains') through atmospheric photochemistry.
Extraction & Chemistry
Extraction method: Commercially obtained from turpentine — a byproduct of the paper pulp industry (gum turpentine from pine resin, or sulfate turpentine from the Kraft process). Turpentine is approximately 60-80% alpha-pinene. Annual global production of turpentine exceeds 300,000 tonnes, making alpha-pinene one of the cheapest and most abundant natural aroma chemicals.

Top-note contributor in pine, coniferous, and aromatic-green compositions. Alpha-pinene provides the bright, opening freshness of pine-based accords. It is usually present as a natural component of essential oils rather than added as an isolate. In aromatic fougères, it contributes pine freshness alongside lavender and rosemary. The molecule is also a starting material for the synthesis of many other terpene-derived aroma chemicals (including linalool and terpineol).
