The Full Story

Sulfur in perfumery refers to volatile sulfur-containing organic compounds: thiols, thioethers, thiolanes, and disulfides. Among the among the strongest odorants, often detectable at parts per trillion.

At high concentrations: repulsive (rotten eggs, skunk). At trace levels: indispensable (tropical fruit, roasted coffee, blackcurrant, savory complexity).

In perfumery, sulfurous molecules are used at extreme dilution. A few parts per million of the right thiol can transform a flat fruity accord. Too much and the composition collapses.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
The human nose can detect hydrogen sulfide at 0.5 parts per billion. This extreme sensitivity evolved as a survival mechanism against rotting food and volcanic vents.

Extraction & Chemistry

Extraction method: Sulfur compounds are produced synthetically. Some occur naturally in essential oils (garlic, onion, blackcurrant bud).
