The actual chemistry has nothing to do with ozone (O₃) gas. The defining molecule is calone (7-methylbenzodioxepin-3(4H)-one, CAS 28940-11-6) [A], first synthesised by Pfizer in 1966 and adopted widely in perfumery from the 1980s onward.
Calone is one of a small family of aquatic-ozonic synthetics. Helional (CAS 1205-17-0) provides a softer aquatic-floral angle; Floralozone (CAS 67634-15-5) carries a more clean-watery character; Dihydromyrcenol (CAS 18479-58-8) supplies the citrus-aldehydic-fresh lift that often pairs with the calone family. Together these compounds defined the 1990s 'aquatic' or 'fresh' fragrance category — L'Eau d'Issey (1992), CK One (1994), Acqua di Giò (1996) are the canonical references.
