In perfumery, the relevant material is the leaf oil, commercially called petitgrain combava (CAS 91771-50-5), obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs. This oil is radically different from the cold-pressed peel oil: the leaf contains 65–85% (S)-citronellal, an aldehyde with a rosy-lemon-green character, while the peel is dominated by beta-pinene (25–35%), sabinene, and limonene — a woodier, more conventional citrus profile.
Chemistry and Distinction
The high citronellal content makes petitgrain combava chemically closer to Eucalyptus citriodora and Java citronella than to other citrus oils. Minor constituents — citronellol (6–10%), linalool (~2%), citronellyl acetate (~2%) — add floral and ester-sweet nuances.
