Scent

Fresh, metallic, ozonic. Clean and sharp — the smell of electricity and clean water. More metallic than Calone, less melon-like than Helional, cleaner than marine aldehydes. A modern freshness that reads as 'air' rather than 'flower' or 'fruit.'

The Full Story

A synthetic molecule designed to provide ozonic, marine-fresh character. Ozonal belongs to the family of marine-ozonic molecules that includes Calone 1951, Helional, and various marine aldehydes. These materials define the aquatic-marine fragrance family that emerged in the early 1990s.

The scent is fresh, clean, and metallic, with a particular ozone-like quality. It carries the smell of air near the ocean, particularly after rain or storms. There is a watery, slightly mel on-like undertone at lower concentrations.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
The 'fresh rain' smell that ozonic molecules mimic is actually caused by petrichor — a combination of geosmin (produced by soil bacteria), plant oils, and ozone generated by lightning. It is a universally pleasant smells, detectable by humans at concentrations as low as 5 parts per trillion.

Extraction & Chemistry

Extraction method: Fully synthetic. No natural equivalent — ozone itself is a reactive gas, not usable as a fragrance material. Ozonal molecules are designed to carries the fresh, electric quality of ozone through structural mimicry.

In Perfumery

Top-note modifier in aquatic, marine, and fresh compositions. Ozonal provides the metallic-fresh, ozone-like character that defines the aquatic fragrance family. Used in marine accords, fresh-clean compositions, and as a freshness modifier in woody and floral blends. Must be used with restraint — excess creates a harsh, chemical impression.
