Dried hay bales in a warm barn, honeyed prune skin, the inside of an old leather glove. Tobacco absolute smells nothing like cigarette smoke — it is the cured leaf itself, coumarinic and fruit-dark, closer to tonka bean than to an ashtray.
Undiluted: near-repulsive, thick, dark, animalic. At 10% dilution: the material opens into hay, dried plum, and warm leather. Sweeter than labdanum, less smoky than birch tar, drier than benzoin. A coumarinic thread runs through the entire development — the same sweet-herbaceous warmth found in tonka bean and fresh-mown hay, but darker and more complex. Late drydown reveals chocolate, old wood, and a faint mossy earthiness. On a blotter, detectable past 400 hours.

Tobacco absolute is obtained by solvent extraction of cured Nicotiana tabacum leaves — specifically the agricultural by-products unfit for smoking. The dried leaves are extracted with hexane or petroleum ether to yield a concrete, which is then washed with ethanol, chilled, and filtered to remove waxes. The resulting absolute is a dark brown, viscous liquid to semi-solid paste. Most perfumery-grade material is denicotinized, reducing nicotine content below 800 ppm.
The scent profile depends heavily on curing method and tobacco variety. Virginia (flue-cured) yields a lighter, sweeter character: semi-dried plum, chocolate-covered fig, green tea, sweet clover. Burley (air-cured) is the darkest and richest: caramel, tonka bean, dried fruits, cedar humidor. Turkish (sun-cured) is the driest and most mature: pronounced hay, musty cotton, aged cigar box. All varieties share a coumarinic backbone — that sweet, hay-like warmth — but diverge sharply in secondary qualities.
The chemical complexity comes from two processes during leaf curing. Carotenoid degradation produces the key odorants: beta-damascenone (CAS 23726-93-4), which provides the highest odor activity value with rose-like dried-fruit notes, and megastigmatrienone (CAS 13215-88-8), which delivers the characteristic warm, hay-spicy tobacco smell. Maillard reactions between reducing sugars and amino acids generate pyrazine derivatives — the nutty, roasted, bread-crust undertones. Neophytadiene and solanone (CAS 2278-53-7) round out the terpene and ketone backbone.
ScenTree credits the 1919 launch of Tabac Blond by Caron (composed by Ernest Daltroff) as the first major perfumery use of tobacco absolute — a fragrance created for women who smoked as an act of social rebellion against Victorian norms. The absolute itself contains no significant nicotine: perfumery-grade material is denicotinized to below 800 ppm, and nicotine's water-solubility means it is largely excluded during the oil-soluble solvent extraction process.
